National cultural monument medieval castle Devín, known in 864 as Dowina, stands on a rock at a height of 212 m above sea level. It was built on the site of a Roman building and a Great Moravian fortified settlement. The castle was blown up by Napoleon’s troops in 1809, and in 1863 the Štúrovci congress was held here. At present, there is an archaeological museum in the castle and a permanent exhibition from prehistory to modern times.
